Richmond Paper Supply Company Ltd was established in 1936 by Francis Gavin (Senior) or ‘Frank’ as he was known to his family, friends, and customers. Frank Senior passed away almost 40 years ago now, but his family is still very much involved in the business.
Today, his son, also called Frank, his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all play a part in continuing the growth of the successful business that he started all those years ago!
The Colour Purple – A Passionate Compromise!
Our company brand colours are not a random choice but a compromise between the colours of the two main football teams in Liverpool, where our business is based. Neither family member could agree to red or blue, and so purple was chosen, so that everyone was happy!

Richmond Paper Company Ltd was established in 1936 when Francis Gavin (Senior) saw an opportunity to supply the fish and chip shops, where he was delivering tripe at that time, with paper for wrapping the takeaway food. He collected unwanted and snagged newspapers from the printers, cut these to size, and sold them to fish and chip shops throughout Liverpool and the surrounding areas.
After a successful start, the business lay dormant between 1939 and 1946 while Francis Gavin ‘Frank’ fought in the war in Ceylon, Egypt, and Normandy.
As the war came to an end, the business moved to new premises, in Richmond Row in Liverpool, which is how the business name, Richmond Paper Supply came about. It also began to take on staff, with ‘Alec’ being the first to join and ‘Jimmy Wylde’ following – wild by name and wild by nature, so they say!
Richmond Paper Supply Company Ltd was officially incorporated and around the same time moved premises again, to Adelaide Place, also in Liverpool. As the business continued to flourish, Frank upgraded his horse and cart for a new Black Bedford van.
Frank Gavin (Junior) joins his father in the business and is soon familiar with the growing range of takeaway packaging and catering disposables that Richmond Paper Supply has to offer. The business expands and need to move again, this time to Glegg Street in Liverpool.
The business not only outgrows the premises but also the Bedford van and invests in its first 7.5 tonne wagon, which was bright purple in colour – a compromise between red and blue – and a colour that still strongly represents the business today.
The third generation of Gavin family members join the business, with Chris first, then Mike, and later Suzie. With more staff, more products, and increasing sales, Richmond Paper Supply once again moves premises, to Forge Street, Liverpool, it’s current trading address.
Now very familiar with successful moves, Richmond Paper Supply moves once again, but this time, online! A new and exciting phase for the family, staff, suppliers and importantly, customers of this long-established successful business.
